Digestate is produced through anaerobic digestion, resulting in a nutrient-dense material that differs from traditional compost, which is created through aerobic breakdown. Whereas compost provides slow-release nutrients, digestate delivers more readily available nutrition for plants.
Digestate can be separated into liquid and solid fractions. The solid fibre behaves similarly to compost, enhancing soil structure, improving water retention, and increasing fertility. It is commonly applied in a 50mm layer for general soil improvement. The solid portion can also be aerobically composted to create a premium, stable compost product.
